WinLIMS.NET (version 7) Training

November 2, 2007

Important Notice to All WinLIMS System Administrators

During 2008 supported WinLIMS systems will be eligible for upgrade to WinLIMS.NET (version 7). Unlike other LIMS companies, Quality Systems International doesn’t force you to ‘re-purchase’ your software when a new product is introduced because it is mutually beneficial to provide you with the upgrade as part of your support contract. You receive software that allows you to keep pace with modern computing architecture while QSI gets to keep you as a customer (and, hopefully as a reference for new customers).

Although the database model remains essentially the same, WinLIMS.NET is a brand new product that is radically different than your existing WinLIMS software for three main reasons.

  1. WinLIMS.NET is a web-based system that was designed using a newer development tool (Microsoft ASP.NET) so the structure of the system is very different than your existing system.
  2. The WinLIMS.NET user interface is more modern and quite different than existing systems.
  3. The interaction with Crystal Reports and Business Objects is very different. In fact, in order to upgrade you will be required to purchase Business Objects version XI in order to fully support web operation.

For these reasons, the upgrades will be more complex than previous upgrades and it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you attend a WinLIMS.NET training course several months PRIOR to your upgrade. Learning how the WinLIMS.NET works (its look & feel and its configuration possibilities) will allow you to properly prepare your company for the upgrade and to re-think your current system’s implementation.

Although QSI is obligated to provide you with any customization that we’ve provided to you in the past, the configurability and design of WinLIMS.NET will allow you to perform a fresh evaluation that may allow you to reduce or even eliminate customization using the new tools that will be available to you.

WinLIMS.NET Sample Manager
As part of the course and upgrade process, QSI will provide you with a copy of the core software upon completion of training in order to allow you to use and explore the new capabilities and possibilities that are available within WinLIMS.NET at your own pace. This will allow you to experiment with different scenarios and generally prepare your organization in a hands-on manner for the upgrade.

The thumbnail to the right provides an illustration of the Sample Management page from WinLIMS.NET (v7). As you can see; it is quite different than your existing system. To better see the software in action, contact Craig Redd (craig.redd -at- qsius.com) to obtain a short ‘movie’ to review some of the highlights of WinLIMS.NET to give you a flavor of the advanced features and convenience tools that are included as part of the system.

On the other hand, if you are comfortable with your current version of WinLIMS and wish to remain static, there may be no need to change anything. QSI will continue to support previous versions of the software (WinLIMS v5 and WinLIMS v6) into the foreseeable future and QSI will give our customers clear notice if we do need to consider an end of life for any of these versions. We are focused on future development but we also remain committed to serving our current customers and fostering these commitments, regardless of whether the software is WinLIMS v5, v6 or the new release of v7.

WinLIMS at Christchurch Water Lab

October 23, 2007

Water, Water Anywhere with WinLIMS A major factor in the decision by Christchurch City Council (New Zealand) to purchase WinLIMS from QSI's Australian subsidiary was its outstanding ability to handle the complex task of sample scheduling in a multi-site environment, needed to manage the Council's waste water analysis laboratories. The analyses to be carried out on each sample are determined by factors such as the sampling point, the nature of the enquiry and so on. Samples and the associated data required to create the laboratory schedule need to be logged in either remotely by field operators or locally by laboratory personnel. Authorized staff should be able to interrogate the system from any desired terminal location, either via the internet or the Council's intranet. All this, plus the complete functionality to run a busy laboratory, was provided by the WinLIMS package.

The WinLIMS Multi-Site Control Module is designed to enable a single WinLIMS implementation to restrict access to information and functions to individual sites or staff. This is especially useful when operating multiple sites within a single database over a Wide Area Network (WAN). Routine samples represent about 80% of the daily workload and these, with their associated task definitions, are logged in automatically using the WinLIMS Auto-scheduling Module. Darren Handforth, Laboratory Manager at the Christchurch City Council said "WinLIMS not only exceeded our needs in terms of functionality, but was also easy to integrate with our IT infrastructure".
